Press Release: Imperial Update Unleashed for ‘Star Wars: Tiny Death Star’

I've spent some time playing Star Wars: Tiny Death Star and it's a fairly enjoyable business simulator game. Disney has released a few upgrades to the game.

The Empire is entering phase two of its destructive master plan in making the Death Star fully operational with the launch of the new Imperial Update.
Now, Star Wars: Tiny Death Star players can go even deeper into the Dark Side with regular Imperial Events to fulfill the Empire’s sinister scheme of amassing resources and collecting special rewards. The game’s overhauled Imperial Assignments system gives players even more missions with additional requirements to be handsomely rewarded. An Events system has also been built to handle the multiple types of events players will be participating in. Finally, a brand new level has been created to access all the new rewards earned: the Cargo Bay.
It’s time to start building resources for the Imperial Army as it will eventually require AT-ATs, TIE Fighters, etc. for the invasion of Rebel Bases and completion of the Death Star’s primary weapon!
In the Imperial update for Star Wars: Tiny Death Star players will now have:
  • New Imperial Assignments System: The Emperor is demanding for more work to be completed, so do the Emperor’s bidding by visiting the new, Imperial Assignments center.
  • Complete over 100 new missions and be handsomely rewarded.
  • Weekly Special Events: Participate in special, limited-time events to protect your battle station.
  • Exclusive Rewards: Earn completely brand-new rewards such as VIPs, Imperial Bux, Costumes, Levels, and Characters by completing assignments and special events.
  • Cargo Bay Floor: It’s your one stop shop to collect special rewards and packages as appreciation for service to the Empire.
Star Wars: Tiny Death Star is available from the from the App Store http://di.sn/eOY, Google Play http://di.sn/cNb, Windows Phone Store http://di.sn/dNX, Windows Store http://di.sn/rHq, and Amazon App Store http://amzn.to/1e4wj44.

Disney Infinity Pirates of the Caribbean Play Set

My youngest is a huge fan of the Skylanders series, mainly for the collectible nature of the figures. Disney Infinity follows a similar path but it looks like there is a larger and more involved gaming feature. Disney has just released images and figures for the Pirates of the Caribbean Play Set.

Is this something you're going to pick up?

Within the Pirates of the Caribbean play set, gamers can take on the role of Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Barbossa and Davy Jones as they set sail to new lands in search of adventure and gold.  Key highlights include:

·         Combat and Customization: Players will be able to explore new lands while battling via water and land to become the king of the sea. Additionally, players can customize their ship, by choosing everything from the overall décor of the vessel to the cannons on board.

·         Play Set: The Pirates of the Caribbean play set adds its own specialized game play mechanics and pieces to the Disney Infinity world such as unique weaponry that when activated in Toy Box mode allows players to create all-new combat challenges, build and customize worlds and much more.

·         Toy Box mode: The pirate trio of Captain Jack Sparrow, Captain Barbossa  and Davy Jones are able to interact with all of the previously revealed Disney Infinity characters from The Incredibles, Monsters University and Cars to create new and exciting adventures on the high seas and beyond.

About Disney Infinity
Disney Infinity is an all-new video game initiative starring the beloved characters from Walt Disney and Pixar Studios’ most popular franchises. Players can place real-world toy versions of their favorite Disney characters onto a device called the Infinity Base and transport them into the virtual game worlds of Monsters University, the Incredibles, Cars and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as into a giant Toy Box.

For additional information on the Disney Infinity Toy Box mode, visit https://infinity.disney.com/toy-box, join the Disney Infinity Facebook Community (Facebook.com/disneyinfinity), and follow us on Twitter (twitter.com/disneyinfinity) and Instagram (instagram.com/disneyinfinity).

Disney Universe (Xbox 360) Review

Disney Universe

We received a preview copy of Disney's Universe for the Xbox 360. I played the game with my eight year-old son and it was a blast. It reminded me a lot of Super Mario titles with cooperative play and coin collecting. The costumes were very cute and the levels, all based on Disney films, were inventive and charming. The co-op play was a little frenetic and we had to really cooperate in order to defeat the enemies, solve the puzzles and keep grabbing coins. I asked my gaming partner to write this review. These are his words;, I only typed them.

You're supposed to defeat levels and get costumes. It is really fun. I liked the TRON suit the best. You are supposed to do the objectives. They pop up on the screen so you know what to do. You had to build cannons in some levels and move the fire around. For instance, you use the cannon to shoot the bridge pieces and make them fall down so you can go across. When you do all the objectives, the exit shows up and you have to go through it to win the level. You have to collect all the Mickey coins. You buy worlds and things with the Mickey coins. By the way, the worlds cost 2000 Mickey coins. You have to defeat all three levels in a world to get enough money to buy the next world.
Hint: Always use keys to open the chest. A star pops out which levels up your character and your weapon.
I think that kids that like to play video games will like this game. Disney Universe is like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. I played the Pirates of the Caribbean level, Monsters INC, Wall-E levels. I can't wait to play more.

Disney Video Game Review: Cars 2 (XBOX 360)

We received a review copy of Cars 2: The Video Game for our XBOX 360 console.  My seven year-old is a rabid Cars fan and videogamer, so I handed the game over to him as soon as I unwrapped it.

This is his review. He dictated it, I typed it.

In Cars 2, you race opponents. If you get in first place, you get lots and lots of Spy Points. Spy Points are like EXP. EXP gives you level ups. The reason you need level ups is to get new cars. You want new cars because they look cooler and sometimes have more speed. You start getting gadgets in races. Gadgets are missiles, rockets, tri-rockets, car bombs, oil slicks, satellite bombs, plasma bolt and other cool stuff. To get first place, you have to gain energy by doing tricks and by getting the Alinnol.

I finished the C.H.R.O.M.E. missions but I am stuck on the Oil Rig Run series two in the SQUAD Series.

Agent Training Series are training and missions. The first mission is in London. It is training where you learn how to drive. Spy Missions are races!

All people who like the Cars movies are going to love this game.

My favorite character, of course, is Lightning McQueen. He is medium speed and medium power. Luigi is low power and lots of speed. He makes it easy to hit stuff. Here are two tips on the game: wherever it says "Do Not Enter" or there is a STOP signal, you should go because it is a short cut; Do not be Mater! He stinks. He is so slow. Another tip is to not let the "fix" cars with the arms ram into you (Ed. Note: Like Guido, the forklift car). They do a lot of damage or they pick you up.

I played a few races with him and found that the gameplay was pretty standard and was a cross between Mario Kart and Split Second. You had weapons that you used to "take out" the lemons but I found myself focusing more on the race, itself. My son really enjoyed the co-op racing when he could focus on the weapons side. It is a fun bonding game, but with every racing game, someone loses and someone wins. The violence of the game seems well suited for the younger set; you fire missiles but you never see them hit. The worst thing you do in the game is bump the lemons off of the road. Since my twelve  year-old showed no interest in the game, I would say this is aimed squarely at the six- to ten year-old market.

Video Game Review: Lego Pirates of the Caribbean for Xbox 360

Disney's LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean The Video Game

We received a review copy of the Xbox 360 version of Disney's LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean last week and spent a fun-filled weekend playing as Captain Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, Elizabeth Swann and more than 70 other characters from the wildly successful film franchise.

I have to admit, that playing Captain Jack Sparrow was hysterical. The designers at TT Games have nailed Sparrow's swagger and walk. As strange as that sounds, it really added to the overall feel of the game.We have played (and own) all of the other games in the LEGO franchise. We are big fans of the Star Wars LEGO games and after playing Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, I was apprehensive about the difficulty level for younger kids. Most kids under 8 are going to have issues with completing some of the quests and the puzzles. The co-op play will allow an older sibling or parent to drop-in at will or play the entire level. One way of keeping gamers moving towards the goal is by using Captain Jack's compass. Accessing the compass from the mini-menu sends out a clue or two for you to follow.

TT Games continues their LEGO-typical gaming with this title:
  • Exploration – Players will explore familiar locations filled with interactive LEGO objects and encounter more than 70 memorable and new characters while making their way through more than 20 levels
  • Combat – The LEGO Caribbean is full of danger! Intense sword fighting moves give the LEGO minifigure a brand new pirate flavor
  • Unforgettable Cut Scenes – Everyone’s favorite scenes from the Pirates of the Caribbean films are re-rendered with LEGO minifigures, in the humorous style synonymous with LEGO video games
  • Puzzles – Players will need all their pirate cunning to find the hidden LEGO treasures and discover the game’s many secrets
  • Two-Player Co-op – Players can join a friend or family member in the same room for two-player “drop-in/drop-out” cooperative action
  • Freeplay – Building a collection of characters throughout the game, players can then use their distinctive abilities to gain access to previously unavailable areas

The most important part of this game is the co-op play. It really brings a solid, pro-family gaming experience. It is a great way to bond with the younger Disney geeks in the family. It also inspired my kids to re-watch Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl. They did spend time comparing the cut scenes in the game to actual scenes in the movie.

Overall, this was one of the more exciting and accessible games in the LEGO franchise. It is also a game that offers challenges to all playing levels.

Besides, where else are you going to get an early preview of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides?

The Future of Junction Point Studios...Ducktales?

The February Game Informer Magazine interviews Junction Pouint Studio head, Warren Spector about Epic Mickey and the future of Disney games. It i spretty obvious that Warren is a big time Disney Geek and can't wait to get his hands into other Studio properties. You can read my full review of Epic Mickey over at 2 Lonely Deeks.

Would Junction Point like to do more with classic Disney characters? What new ideas might you be interested in exploring in a second Epic Mickey game?

I've actually always envisioned Junction Point well, once we became a part of Disney - as the studio that draws inspiration from the Archives. I've been pretty up from about my love of the Ducks. l’d love to do a Duck Tales game, and a Gremlins game would be amazing. Oswald would make a great leading man...er...rabbit. As far as a second Epic Mickey game goes, there's no shortage of interesting challenges to tackle. l have some ideas about music gameplay that could be fun and there is a world of stuff we can do with paint and thinner that we even have thought of the first time around. Or we could do some stuff completely different and not do any of the stuff I've mentioned here. Who knows? There's no shortage of ideas!

Epic Mickey Hidden Books!

Epic Mickey for the Nintendo Wii has been getting some serious game play at Imaginerding. In short: it is gorgeous (for the Wii), a lot of fun and sounds fantastic. It is obvious that Warrren Spector and the crew at Junction Point Studios really, really know their Disney history! Besides meeting a lot of older and forgotten Disney characters, you also get a brief and fun history of the characters through various cut-scenes. It is pretty stupendous to be able to play a side-scrolling rendition of Steamboat Willie, the Clock Cleaners and various Oswald shorts! Walking through the Oswald versions of different Disneyland areas is a real treat. My two complaints relate to the camera controls (you will die many, many times) and the lack of spoken dialogue. Beyond that, this game is a dream for Disney geeks, enthusiasts and historians.

Hidden in the Mickey Junk Mountain Zone are a plethora of Mickey Mouse-related collectibles. It is a lot of fun to explore that area; just like in the Parks, keep looking all around!

I ran across two books in the zone.

The first one is The Adventures of Mickey Mouse Number 2. It was published in 1932 by David McKay and was 32 pp of comic goodness!

Our next hidden book is The Mickey Mouse Book. This is a 1930 release and is one of the first licensed images of Mickey Mouse.

David at Vintage Disney collectibles wrote a wonderful piece about this book:
Bibo and Lang, one of the Studio’s earliest licensees, published the first Disney character book in 1930. The book was titled simply, and fittingly, the Mickey Mouse Book.

While some collectors have assumed Disney animator Ub Iwerks drew the Mickey Mouse image on the book’s front cover, a New York freelance artist named Albert Barbelle may have in fact been the illustrator. Barbelle submitted a bill to the Studio in September 1930 for his work on the book.

In the fall of 1930, 26,219 copies of the book were printed. The first copies were offered for sale in the November 15, 1930 issue of The Official Bulletin of the Mickey Mouse Club. Copies of the book were priced between 7 and 8 ½ cents each, depending on the number ordered. The suggested retail was 15 cents each.

Copies in the first run were offered almost exclusively to theater managers as a promotional item meant for distribution amongst Mickey Mouse Club members. One Salem Oregon theater ordered 2,500 copies. First run copies contain advertising on the inside front cover, inside back cover, and the bottom edge of the back cover.

David also provides some images of several of the pages. Head on over and check them out!

Video Game Review: Tangled for the Nintendo Wii

Disney Tangled, a review by a seven year-old.

What Do You Do In the Game?
You try to get Rapunzel back to the Castle where she belongs. You do games to help people in the game like helping Tor protect his flowers in Flower Defense.

What Do Flynn and Rapunzel Do in the Game?
Flynn can knock out the bad guys and they disappear with a sword. Flynn can cut down the thistles so Rapunzel can get through. Rapunzel uses a frying pan to knock them out. Rapunzel can grow flowers to find insects, birds and flowers. Then she draws them in her book. She uses her hair to swing to get into places and help Flynn climb up.

Who Will Like this Game?
Both boys and girls can play. Dads and moms will like playing too.

Why Will Boys Like this Game?
Because Flynn is fun. The mini-games are fun. When I played with my dad, he was Flynn and I was Rapunzel and it was still a lot of fun!

Will Girls Like the Game?
Yes, of course they would!

A Parent's Perspective
We are a gaming family. We have two Xbox 360s, a Nintendo Wii, two DSI XLs and several computers. Our kids have grown up with games and they are a part of our family time. We love multiplayer games that foster a sense of adventure and teamwork. Surprisingly, this game excels in the area of cooperative play. The characters have different skills and you need both to complete the level. Also, each character collects a different item: Flynn grabs coins and Rapunzel picks up sundrops. I loved this! There was no competition to get the items before your partner did. The coins and sundrops also act as your health. When you stun an enemy they lose coins and sundrops; conversely, your character loses coins or sundrops if you get stunned or knocked down.

Most co-op games inspire a bit of evil camaraderie. Disney Tangled is a true co-op game. When your characters wander two far away from each other, the screen splits and magically merges back when you get close. It was disorienting at first, but made the gameplay that much better. It is really a good setup for parents and young children to play together. If the kids get stuck, you can guide them or switch characters on-the-fly to get out of a jam. We have played "family-style" games before where one person got left behind and their character died. It was very frustrating. With Tangled, we never got stuck or lost. We just followed the coins/sundrops and looked for places for Rapunzel to let down her hair!

There were many interesting and simple mini-games, like painting!

Most of the gameplay is split into two major types: sidescrolling levels and mini-quests. The mini-quests can get fairly redundant, but should keep most younger children engaged. (You know...go get this cup and I will give you the key, etc.) The graphics are well done and look similar to the film. The cutscenes are very enjoyable and follow the artwork that Rapunzel did in the films. You can also play the game with or without the nunchuk attachment.

Disney Interactive furnished a copy of this title for review.

60-Second Game Review - Disney Channel All Star Party

Ready, get set, go!

Take a peek at the latest 60-Second Game Review from Two Loneley Deeks! The week we are showcasing Disney Channel All Star Party (Nintendo Wii).

My seven year-old gives this game a huge two thumbs up! He loved playing as and against his favorite Disney Channel All Stars. I played a few rounds with him and I have to admit that I did not like getting beat by the Jonas Bros. on some of the competitions. This is a great four-player game with a lot of inventive mini-game designs. Sometimes, the controls seemed rather random, but playing an enjoyable video game with my boys far outweighs any negative game play.

Phineas & Ferb: A Review From Deek Junior!

We are major video game players at Imaginerding. Two Xbox 360s, a Nintendo Wii, two Nintendo DS (one is a DSi XL), two computers and two android-based phones all provide a constant stream of videogame goodness in our home and on the go. We jumped on the opportunity to play through a review copy of the latest Phineas and Ferb game for the DS.

This review was texted to me by my eleven year-old son. I think he was making fun of me...

Phineas and Ferb Ride Again (Nintendo DS)
This sequel to the original game is far easier and more fun. But remember, this is one of those games where you have to go back to earlier missions to beat the game. It is menat for solo players doing the campaign. It is meant for ages three through thirteen and twenty through forty-five. Only play if you do not have a very complicated mind. Do not overdo it! Warning!!! the next section is for deeks only! Alpha deek could not beat mission one! Hahahahahahahaha! I am on mission three! Deeking off! Oh! I mean: Connery signing off!
